The WSL is back after a three week break, with Tottenham Hotspur vs Everton Women at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. It might see some joy return to White Hart Lane, where there has hardly been a home victory in… forever?
The hosts go into the game a whopping 12 points ahead of their opponents. However, the Toffees are on a good run. They have won their last three WSL games. Spurs’s fortunes have been more mixed, going win-loss-win-loss-win in their last five. They are in fifth, behind Arsenal on goal difference alone. However, Gunners have two matches in hand.
After frustrations against the top sides and that chaotic win against Aston Villa in the league, Martin Ho’s side need to keeping beating those around them. The recently named Barclays WSL manager of the month acknowledged this in his pre-match press conference, commenting: “I think if you’re looking at the points, they come against teams that are below us or teams that people would see that we’re competing against. It’s not to say that we haven’t performed against the teams above us because we have, I think we’ve grown in performance in those games, we’ve pushed some of those teams really close, but I think it’s not anything we’re doing differently compared to what we do against any other teams.”
Toffees Fail to Pack a Punch up Front
According to data from Twelve Football’s Earpiece tool, Everton lack a cutting edge upfront. They are below average on most metrics, generally failing to penetrate in the final third and generate chances.

Defensively, things are not much better. Teams are, on average, getting over 25 touches in the Toffee’s box and taking almost 14 non-penalty shots per match. They have been guilty of giving the ball away in transition too.

However, you should not forget that good run of form the visitors are on.
Tottenham Hotspur vs Everton Women Absentees
Spurs will be without their starting centre-back partnership. Clare Hunt and Toko Koga have had standout seasons so far, but are both on international duty at the Asian Cup. Ho is trying to look at the positives, noting that Everton have absentees due to the competition as well. “You try to look at what players may play against you and what threats the individual players collectively pose, so we’ve looked at those situations, but what you never know is when so many players have come out of the team and the team that’s going to play you is going to look different, you don’t know who’s going to play where, he said.
The Spurs boss aded that “it’s more trying to pick up what they do from a consistency perspective with their patterns and how they move and how they play, trying to defend those situations and then looking at the individual players when we get on that game day of what threats they pose.”
Drew Spence returns after suspension, though. Ella Morris is back training, but will not take part on Sunday.
Whoever does play, there may well be some rustiness the break. Tottenham Hotspur cannot let this opportunity for a home win slip.
