Drew Spence is the new Spurs Women captain. The 33-year-old joined in 2022 from Chelsea and was the obvious choice to succeed Bethany England. Vice captain Molly Bartrip also left, leaving the key leadership spot open.
Commenting on her appointment, the Jamaica international said: “I’m proud to be made captain this year. With my experience, I hope to lead the girls so we can have a successful season together. And it’s not just myself, there are many leaders within this group. In the performance group we have people that can lead us in different ways. Combined with the rest of the team, we can really push on and have a successful year.”
That performance group picked by manager Martin Ho is made up of Jessica Naz, Eveliina Summanen, Toko Koga, Julie Blakstad and Caitlin Dijkstra. Interestingly, not all those players have been at the club for a huge amount of time, with Naz the longest serving. Toko Koga is only 20.
Spurs Name New Men and Women’s Captain
The appointment of Spence as Spurs women’s captain follows Micky Van de Ven being announced as the new skipper of the men’s team. He is the first of five captains named by boss Roberto De Zerbi. The group is made up of Pedro Porro, James Maddison, Ben Davies and Archie Gray.
“It’s a massive honour to be captain of Tottenham Hotspur,” said van de Ven. This is a massive Club and to have the responsibility to lead the team out of the tunnel every game, wearing the armband, is something you dream of,”
Both Spence and van de Ven signed long-term deals in recent months. The former announced hers just before Christmas. Meanwhile, the Dutch international inked his agreement just days ago.
